Over the last two years, I've tried to turn my thousands of digital files into albums. I craved a physical representation of our memories; something I could pour over while sitting on the couch and share with A when he's old enough to sit for longer than 30 seconds.
My first album with Blurb was my wedding album (not pictured), and I was beyond thrilled with the final result. For Christmas that year, I made albums for each set of parents, and one for us. Blurb was amazing to work with, and helped me through all of my technical issues with uploading (on the day before Thanksgiving, no less!).
Last year I moved onto designing our 2009 and 2010 albums, completing them slowly over several months. This winter I moved onto 2011, my biggest project to-date. At 294 pages, this album was many many months in the making.
Here are some pictures of our 2011 family album:
I'm beyond thrilled with the final result, even if I did screw up the spine a bit. Gone is my OCD-dream of having 20 family albums lined up all neat & tidy in a row.
Blurb's print quality is amazing, as is their customer service. The biggest challenge was of course choosing which photos would make the album. In the end, I decided not to limit the pictures or the page count. I wanted to enjoy as many pictures as possible from 2011 - the year we became a family of 3 - every time I looked through these pages.
One more album and I'll be caught up! Wish me luck!

Happy Birthday, A!
I wanted you more than you ever will know
so I sent love to follow you, wherever you go.
It's high as you wish it. It's quick as an elf.
You'll never outgrow it...it stretches itself!
It never gets lost, never fades, never ends...
if you're working...or playing...or sitting with friends.
You can dance 'til you're dizzy...paint 'til you're blue...
There's no place, not one, that my love can't find you.
And if someday you're lonely, or someday you're sad,
or you strike out at baseball, or think you've been bad...
just lift up your face, feel the wind in your hair.
That's me, my sweet baby, my love is right there.
In the green of the grass...in the smell of the sea...in the clouds floating by...at the top of a tree...
in the sound crickets make at the end of the day...
"You are loved. You are loved. You are loved," they all say.
My love is so high, and so wide and so deep, it's always right there, even when you're asleep.
So hold your head high and don't be afraid
to march to the front of your own parade.
If you're still my small babe or you're all the way grown,
my promise to you is you're never alone.
You are my angel, my darling, my star...
and my love will find you, wherever you are.
Happy happy birthday, sweet A.
Words cannot describe how you have changed my life, or how you have changed me.
You make every day sweeter.
You are a joy... a true & perfect joy.
You have the energy of a wild animal, and a heart as big as the sky.
Thank you for choosing me to be your momma.
- Wherever You Are, My Love Will Find You, Nancy Tillman

Easter Basket
I'm kind of the queen of procrastination. I work well under pressure, so why not wait until the last minute?
Well, I've grown up a little this past year, and realized that by planning ahead, I feel a lot less stress. And now, for the first time in years, I'm managing to get stuff done on time.
Easter and A's birthday are just a few weeks apart, so I started working on his Easter basket as soon as Valentine's Day was over. Oh, and I really wanted a Pottery Barn Kids basket this year... which I missed on last year. Why? Because I procrastinated. See? It really does pay to plan ahead ;)
For Easter, I knewwe the Easter Bunny wanted to give A an art space in the playroom. We made so much progress on the magnet/chalk wall this weekend, and I can barely wait to see the look on A's face when he makes the connection that it is all for him!
Since the big reveal will be on Easter morning, A's Easter Basket is full of items he can use in his new space. And a few other things that his momma wanted, just for good measure.
And last but not least, the custom alphabet magnets from Crunchy Farm Baby! Leah was awesome to work with, and let me customize the entire order with a combination of fabrics that she already had and that I purchased. I love them, and I'm SO excited to play with these. Oops - I'm so excited for A to play with these!
Now all that's left is to hide some eggs and finish our art wall!

A Valentine's Gift for A
Happy Monday!
This weekend was perfection. The only way it could have been better was if I had today off... I don't, but I'll call it perfect anyway.
It was so great being snowed in Friday night. I was looking forward to catching up on Blue Bloods with C, but I fell asleep in A's bed (again), and didn't move to our bed until 11. I was nice to catch up on sleep (and cuddles) with my favorite little guy, and go to bed really early. On Saturday we had a great night with friends at the children's museum, followed by a delicious dinner (complete with milkshakes!). Sunday was the best combination of being productive, relaxing and playing outside. And for the perfect ending to a perfect day... we (all) sat on the couch, watching the Grammy's, while A danced and clapped and smiled SO big (especially when Kelly's Clarkson's "Stronger" came on). Seeing him light up for all of those songs made my heart so full. LOVE him.
Just wanted to share one of A's Valentine's Day gifts that has been a big hit the last week in our house. This was originally meant to be a Christmas present, but ended up getting delayed in shipping (totally my fault), and became a Valentine's gift, instead!
The Mini Book of Names & Faces from Pinhole Press!
This is such a cute little book for toddlers! A is a great age to appreciate this book - he loves looking at pictures of himself and his family, and is also starting to talk, so hopefully this book will help him associate names with a face.
I think he likes it!
I have to say, I'm also loving this book. I'm amazed at the quality - it is sure to withstand lots of wear & tear, and the colors are vibrant & fun. With 12 pages that you can customize, there is plenty of space for family & friends. It was so fun to go through and pick a picture for each person, and the quality of the printed pictures is amazing.
This would be a great gift for any kids in your life!
This should go without saying, but Pinhole Press in no way, shape or form compensated me for this review. In fact, I'm pretty sure they have no idea who I am.

{Big Boy Room} Mood Board
Hi friends! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend - we definitely did! Having an extra day off was glorious.
Our little guy had a big weekend: his crib came down, and he's now sleeping on a mattress on the floor. He has done great the last two days, which makes me feel so much better about the decision. I will admit that I cried a little bit as we disassembled the crib, but I know this move was for the best.
Just wanted to share A's big boy room inspiration. Because we're planning to move A into his twin bed next month, I've already bought the quilt & sham below, but still need to buy sheets. The move into a new room will most likely be a summer project, but I've already started to search out things on sale & that we can refinish or DIY. I am SO excited!

My Baby Sleeps on a Dog Bed
It sounds worse than it is…
But my baby sleeps on the dog’s bed.
Let me start from the beginning: as you might remember (from
here, here and here), our little guy is the world’s worst sleeper. Has been
since his very first night in the hospital, and continues to be to this day. I
won’t go into a whole dissertation on sleep, but believe me when I say we’ve tried it all. A just wants his mommy. I work full time (which means I have enough
mommy guilt to fill a room), and I usually give into him in the middle of the
night. Why? Because I’m a softie. And because I need to sleep, too. And because
my little boy wants his momma to lay
next to him. My days are numbered with
how long he will ask me to do that… so, I (happily) oblige.
On December 1st, while away at my in-laws house,
A learned how to climb out of his pack n’play. I knew that day was coming, but
when I actually saw him do it? I was shocked. He got his legs over the side so
easily, he actually looked like he has been practicing that move for months. By
the time I was upstairs, he was already in the hallway. The next day, he
attempted an escape from his crib. I know he would only try this when he was
awake, and left to fuss, so as a temporarily solution, I hid one of Otto’s old
bed’s under his crib, and we pulled it out at naptime and bedtime… just in case
he fell out, he would have a soft landing.
Around this time, I also realized that I was probably making
things worse by allowing A to come in our room at night. I will
never be that mom that says our children have no place in our bed, because
frankly, what is ours is theirs and there is nothing in the world like sleeping next to your little baby.
Nothing.
BUT, I needed to start helping A make better sleep habits.
A discovered the dog’s bed peeking out from his crib one day
at naptime, and asked me to pull it out. So I did. And? He grabbed his pillow
and lovies and fell asleep on it. In under 2 minutes. So I let him stay there.
Instead of fighting his nap (like he always had), he just curled up and went to
sleep. This went on for a few weeks…
By this point I had made it
a real “bed”. It has a sheet, and a pillow, and a blanket. It has
bolsters on 3.5 sides, and frankly, doesn’t look much different than the
blow-up toddlers beds I have seen on Amazon.

Not that I feel I have to justify my decision, but Otto
basically slept on this bed a total of 10 times since we bought it for him. In
fact, this dog bed was more expensive than A’s crib mattress (which, maybe
explains why he sleeps better on it!).
While I was home over the holidays, A and I did “One Nap
Bootcamp” – my own, completely made-up, could-totally-fail, 10-day course in
getting him down to 1 nap, and sleeping through the night. On the dog bed. If
it worked, we would transition him to a toddler bed. If it didn’t, well, I resigned
myself that I’m just going to be tired and that I’m not telling anyone, ever
again, that my kid doesn’t sleep through the night. Because I’m SO over the
crazy looks and the “have you tried/you have to/it’s because” explanations
everyone has given me the last 20 months.
The first few nights, A was up at least once, maybe twice,
but each time I’d go in his room and ask him to lay back down, and he did. Sometimes
I would fall asleep too, but I tried really hard to only stay for 10-15
minutes, and then once he was asleep, I would leave. If he woke up at 6, I would
bring him in bed with me, and we’d both sleep until 8 or 8:30. This was BLISS.
Last week, we decided to tweak a few things. I realize what I’m
about to say makes me sound like some superstitious athlete (which I was), but we
decided to try a few small things just to see what happened, and this is what
we stuck with after his first night of sleeping 9-6:30, in his room... In the dog
bed.
• Warm milk before bedtime
• Positive reinforcement before he closes his eyes*
• Raising the temperate 1 degree in his room
We’ve now had 8 wonderful nights of our little guy, happily asking to go
to sleep, and staying in his room until anytime between 7 – 8:30 in the
morning. Once in a while I will have to go in and tell him to lay back down,
but he falls back asleep quickly and stays asleep. OHMYGOD!
We are giving A one more week of the dog’s bed, before we
transition him to a (real) mattress on the floor. We’ve learned our lesson, and
are letting him try a soft mattress that we already have in the house, before
we buy one. If that works, in February he will move to his twin bed (still in
his room), and sometime this summer we’ll move him into his “big boy room”.
Of course, now that I have “big boy room” on the brain, I’ve
been on the hunt for some inspiration. I'll be sharing his new room inspiration soon!
If you are reading this and your baby or toddler doesn’t
sleep through the night – you are not alone, and you are NOT crazy. Do whatever
works for you, and if that means you need to buy a dog bed from L.L. Bean, you have
my support.
;)

Baby Product Favorites: 12 - 18 months
Seeing how our little guy is about to be 20 months old, I thought we should share his "must haves" from 12-18 months!
1. Little Tykes Crazy Coupe
My in-laws gave this to A first his first birthday, and it was an instant hit. If we're playing outside, you will find him in this. Before he was old enough to know how to use his feet to get around, you'd find us (and my parents) taking him for a spin (x27) on our deck. And now that he can move around on his own? Weapon-du-jour to chase the dogs. This kid can't get enough!
2. Mega Blocks
Great, great toy. Big enough for little hands, and comes with a zipper tote for easy clean-up and travel. A adores when you build something for him (he'll even pass you the blocks). But what he really loves? Knocking down your masterpiece. Added bonus is that this is my favorite toy!
3. Jellycat Monkey
Santa brought this monkey last year on Christmas, and after a few obligatory pictures, the monkey sat in A's rocking chair, not to move for the next 7 months. One day, A asked me to take monkey off the chair, and he's been a mainstay in our living room ever since. Monkey eats at the table, watches videos and takes naps on a pillow. A loves playing "pretend" with monkey, and snuggling him as much as he can.
4. Anatex Activity Cube
Again, another gift that Santa delivered last year. While A definitely played with this often from 9-12 months, he's loved it more now that he's older. I'm not sure why, but he loves to tip it on the side. This is a quality toy that will stand the test of time.
5. Baby Bjorn Smart Potty
Post for another day, but A started potty training himself at 18 months. I don't want to come off as that mom who thinks my kid is a genius for figuring this out on his own, or that I'm super-mom because he's peeing on the potty. I'm totally not (see previous posts where I mention my child doesn't sleep). Moving on... we love the potty because A loves the potty. End of story.
6. Munchkin Suction Bowls
As our little guy started to feed himself, these bowls became a staple in our house. They help him by allowing him to focus on getting his food on his spoon, rather than having to hold the bowl. My only complaint is that they are not dishwasher-safe, but otherwise, we love them.
7. Children's Ibuprofen
A has always had a rough time with teething, but we thought the worst was behind us. A's 4 canine teeth were by far and away the worst when it came to pain, and Children's Ibuprofen helped us through some rough days & bleary nights.
8. iPad
When your kid hates the car, you'll do anything for silence. Definitely not my proudest mom-moment, but we now have peaceful car rides and a happy baby. It doesn't hurt that the iPad is also a toy for C, but you didn't hear that from me!
9. Thomas Electric Toothbrush
This is toothbrush #3, and the only one that feels substantial enough to tolerate the hands of a wild 18-month old. Bonus points for being train-themed, and that A is now excited when we tell him it is time to brush teeth.
10. Baby Bjorn Bibs
See #6, but these are definitely a must have if your child is beginning to feed themselves. Pocket is large, and catches everything that misses his mouth. And I love that it doesn't add to my pile of laundry - a quick wash in the sink and we're done. Doesn't get better than that!

Favorite Baby Gifts
Today we're home, waiting on Hurricane Sandy to strike. Both of our offices were closed today, and because mass transit into NYC is shut down until further notice, I have a feeling I'll be home the next few days. As long as we have power and stay safe, I can't say I mind a few extra days with my baby boy. He even let me nap today!
With the holidays quickly approaching, I thought I'd share some of my favorite baby gifts! Often times, I will want to give something special to a close friend, rather than purchasing off their registry. These are all gifts I've either given or received, and in my personal opinion are all wonderful!
Dahl House Frame
I've given this frame to a few friends as a baptism gift, and it was so well received. These frames can be personalized with just about anything, and you can choose the paint colors and grosgrain ribbon around the edge (you can't see it in this picture, but it is adorable!). They are all hand-made in New England, and are definitely timeless gifts that will last for years to come.
Etiquette Socks
These socks are ADORABLE! Perfect for when you want to bring a little gift once baby gets home from the hospital. The colors are fantastic, and Etiquette offers so many cute options in their gift packages. Everyone loves cute little baby socks, and you know that they'll get used often.
The Lab Onesie & BibPerfect for pet lovers! Etsy has multiple sellers that can customize onesies or bibs with a specific dog breed. The Lab only offers labs (obviously), and since Otto was becoming a big brother when A was born, these were a perfect nod to him. The onesie also has a matching lab on the butt - too cute!
Jellycat Stuffed Animals
These are the softest stuffed animals I have found, and are so well made. A has the elephant sitting on a shelf in his room, and I see another one in the near future as we approach the time to send our pacifiers off to the paci-fairy ;)
L.L. Bean Totes
Hands down, this is my favorite gift to give. Everything L.L. Bean makes is quality, and I can tell you from experience that I have gotten more use from the Extra Large tote than any other baby item we own. With all the traveling we do, this is perfect to pack all of A's essentials, and can stand up to the wear and tear of every day use. I love choosing the handle & embroidery color to match the nursery, and adding baby's new initials. This is definitely my go-to gift!
Custom Calligraphy Artwork & Frame
A new favorite of mine, Whoa Nelly Press will custom make calligraphy artwork with whatever quote you choose. This happens to be one I asked her to do for a friend expecting twins (her 2nd and 3rd babies), and paired with a mat & frame, is a perfect addition to any baby's nursery. This is a great gift for those friends who already have all the baby necessities, but you still want to give them something meaningful.
I'll be positing more gift ideas in November, so be sure to check back for those. Gift giving & holiday shopping are two of my most favorite things to do, and love to offer up suggestions for great gift ideas!
Stay safe friends!

Window Shopping Favorites: Zara Home Kids
Happy Monday!
I've been browsing the Zara Home website ever since their launch last month, and have found so many things that I love! I have to say though, that my very favorite part of the launch is Zara Home Kids. Everything is cute, while still being timeless. And true to the Zara brand, everything is a great price!
Here are some of my favorites!
This toiletry case would be perfect for our many road trips. I've been needing a little washable tote to store A's shampoo, medicine and lotion while we're traveling.
This dishware and flatware set would be such a great gift, for a little girl or boy!
These towels are just adorable. I'm loving the plaid to replace A's baby towels - they are a great mix of playful and sophisticated.
LOVE this rug, just wish it came in more sizes!
This pillow and knit throw might be making their way into A's big boy room next year. So cute!
These sets of bibs are a perfect gift. I love bibs with timeless, playful patterns, and these fit the bill.
This fleece throw would be perfect on a toddler bed for the winter.
These storage baskets are so cute. I love the lace detail for a little girls room, but the liners could easily be removed for a boys room.
Love these chairs for a playroom - they are the perfect size for a play table, and are a great price!
I'll definitely be coming back to Zara Home Kids when I start putting A's big boy room together!
Hope you all have a great week.

Next Time
Last week, my little baby toddler turned 18 months old. For some reason, that seems like a big milestone. One and a half. Closer to 2 than to 1. It is a big milestone.
I've been thinking a lot about Baby #2. And to be perfectly honest, the more I think about having another baby, the more I want to wait. I'm just not ready yet. Maybe tomorrow I'll be ready, or maybe in 3 months, or 6 months. But right now, I'm not. I'm soaking up every minute with A: he's so funny - so innocent - and I know that this time is fleeting. So today, I'm enjoying my one and only.
That said, I am also a planner, and naturally, like to think for a long time about big things. Like having another baby... how I would handle being a mom to two little ones... how our family dynamic would change... and how I would do things differently the next time.
The next time… I’ll ask for bonding time right after birth.
We
were so blessed to have my mom in the delivery room with us, and my
father and in-laws waiting right down the hall. All of them had been
there, drinking lukewarm hospital coffee since 7:00 in the morning. A
was born almost 14 hours later, and once they had him all cleaned off
and C and I had a few minutes of meeting our little man, we ushered them
all in to meet their new grandson. Those moments where a whirlwind, and
oh-so special, but about an hour later I realized I hadn’t let A try to
nurse. I fumbled with my nursing cover and tried to get A to latch
while everyone smiled in new-grandparent bliss. It didn’t go well – maybe I was distracted,
maybe there was too much noise, maybe he wasn’t ready…. Breastfeeding
was a struggle from the very beginning, and while I realize there could
be many reasons for this, I can’t help but wonder – what if I had more one-on-one time with A, right after he was born?
The next time… I’ll bring the baby out early on.
I’m
a rule follower. Most people see this as me being reserved, or overly
cautious, but... it’s just who I am. If I’m following the rules, I’m happy. So
when my pediatrician told me to keep A away from places that had
re-circulated air, I listened. I didn’t bring him to the grocery store
until he was 3 months old. So, we camped out in the house and took lots
of walks around the block. Looking back, I wish I did more when he would
nap in his car seat and in the Moby. We should have gone out to lunch
more, or to see friends, or for walks around our favorite little towns.
The next time, I won’t
have the luxury of just staying at home (with a busy toddler, who
can?!), so I’m going to have to bring the baby with me. But this time, I’ll be ok with it
The next time… I will throw away the sleep book.
A
was the.worst.sleeper in the world. When he was a newborn, he’d sleep…
but only on me or in the car. Once we hit 4 weeks, all bets were off and
A was awake most of the day, until I gave into the swing, which he
would eventually nap in until he was 7 months old. I know, bad mommy. I
read every sleep book I could get my hands on. I wasn’t comfortable with
cry-it-out, so I had to come up with my own approach. I’ll share my
little secret with you: the baby will sleep eventually. A didn’t sleep
through the night until he was 15 months old. And now? He's a decent sleeper. He's not doing 12-hour stretches, but most nights, he's doing 9 or 10. I
put SO much stress on myself for months, for what? Because my
child wasn’t sleeping like every book told me he should? He was happy,
growing, thriving, meeting milestones. And me? I was a basket case. I
talked about sleep to anyone and everyone. If the next
baby is like A, it’s fine. I know I can survive on little sleep, and I
refuse to stress myself out just because my little one isn’t doing
something ‘by the book’.
The next time… I’m going to give myself a little grace.
Next time,
I’m sleeping when the baby sleeps. I thought I could be super-mom, and
clean my house and do the laundry and reorganize my linen closet during
nap time. Because nap time was never (until the swing… cue the angels singing!), I would just sit with A while he slept on me. And the whole time I’d be looking at the clock, stressing that my house was dirty and I could be doing other things. Next time,
I’m going to savor those moments more. I’m going to sleep with my
little baby, and cuddle when they want to. I’m going to slow down, and
soak it all in. The laundry can wait until tomorrow, and so can the
dishes and the linen closet and my email. Next time, I’m going to give myself a little grace.

Baby Girl Nursery Inspiration
Over the summer, a dear friend of mine asked for my help in designing a nursery for her second little girl, due in the fall. She was looking for something different from her first nursery, and something that her baby girl could grow into.
The parameters were simple: lavender & green, simple and classic. So I sought to design a clean but romantic space, that could be achieved on a budget.
I think this is the perfect spot for baby girl #2, and hopefully a space that she'll love for many years to come!

{Home Tour Friday} - Toddler Room
Way back in June, I promised to share pictures of A's nursery-turned-toddler-room. The pictures included in his nursery post were taken before we went to the hospital... meaning we didn't know if we would be coming home with a little baby boy or baby girl!
Over the last year and a half, we've added some small touches to make it a room for a little boy, and I really love how it's turned out!
Here are some more detail shots that our wonderful photographer, Bryan Avigne, took back in April.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
