What I Read: 2013

Reading is one of the few things that I do only for me...
I love getting lost in a book, connecting with the characters, and thinking about the plot long after I've finished.

I tell my husband all the time that my dream job would be to read books and write reviews on them. I would love love LOVE to get paid to read books all day!

One of my 2013 resolutions had been to read 1 book a month. As someone who commutes by train daily to work, I read a lot. My reading happens to come in spurts, so while I do read at least 12 books in a year, sometimes I read 3 in a month and none in the next.

Here's a rundown of what I read last year, along with links to each book!

Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn

Sweet Tooth, by Ian McEwan

Divergent, by Veronica Roth

Insurgent, by Veronica Roth

Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand

The Silver Linings Playbook, by Matthew Quick

Where We Belong, by Emily Giffin

Defending Jacob, by William Landay

The Storyteller, Jodi Picoult

Bloom, by Kelle Hampton

Left Neglected, by Lisa Genova

Still Alice, by Lisa Genova

The Hunger Games Trilogy, by Suzanne Collins

The Husband's Secret, by Liane Moriarty

Allegiant, by Veronica Roth

{What I'm Reading}: February & March Edition

A little behind on my monthly book posts, but I've been on a bit of a reading streak lately. I chalk it up to my book club at work. And by book club I mean 2 of my friends who are reading the same books as me. We're really fancy ;)

Divergent

Insurgent

I won't try to break these two into their own reviews - once you read the first, there's almost no way you can stop before reading the second. They are THAT good. Divergent & Insurgent are a little outside my comfort zone, but truly were amazing. Veronica Roth has her third book in the series due out in October, and I can't wait!

The Age of Miracles

The Age of Miracles was a decent read. I felt like I was waiting for the big "reveal" to happen the entire book. And then I turned the last page and was really disappointed. I'm not to sure why this book make Oprah's book list, but there are a lot of amazing reviews.

Unbroken

Hand's down, one of the best books I've ever read. It's been a long time since I've read a biography, and Laura Hillenbrand did not disappoint. I had a hard time putting this book down at all, and given it's size, that is an impressive feat. I can honestly say that after reading this book, I have more respect for both our veterans and current service men and woman, than ever before. I highly recommend this book!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter! I'll be sharing pictures later this week once I get them off the camera!

Mom's On Call - Toddler Book

Desperate for some advice on discipline, I chose to read Mom's On Call. Overall, I have to say this book was harsh, and that the opinions & advice are not for the faint of heart. There are certainly some suggestions that C & I appreciated, and embrace wholeheartedly. I mentioned it here, but Mom's On Call suggests positive reinforcement before bed (just as they are closing their eyes), as a way to convince your toddler to stay in their bed all night. I'm not sure if this was the one thing that changed A's sleep habits, but, we're still doing it every night. I thought the suggestions on 'confident face' were spot-on, and

The harshest part of the book for me, was their directive on your 'one and only job' at night... to never, under any circumstance, open the door to your child's room. EVER (OK, except for sickness... but how do you know your child has a fever in the middle of the night if you don't go in the room?) In fact, they suggest reversing the handle so that you can lock it from the outside, and go on to tell you how this is safe, especially in case of a fire (so that your child can't escape and roam the house in fear). Um... I don't really know where to start, but all I can say is that I'm not that mom. Maybe this works for some people, but it is not for us. Never responding to A's cries in the middle of the night? Ignoring that he is calling for me? I couldn't. It actually makes me a little sad to think there are other toddlers out there, who wake up in the middle of the night calling for their momma's, only to cry themselves back to sleep.

( and now this review is already much longer than I thought it would be... )

Gone Girl

Of course, I had to read Gone Girl. I was maybe the only person on earth who hadn't read it. Gone Girl lived up to every expectation I had for it, and more. Gillian Flynn is a gifted writer, and always kept you guessing with every page. The thought that she put into her characters, and their development throughout the book, was very impressive. I have to admit, I was a little confused by the ending. However, once I thought about it some more, it made sense, but still seemed abrupt to me. I would definitely read any of Flynn's other books, after reading this one.

Sweet Tooth

I am only 20% through Sweet Tooth, so I can't give a complete review. I will say, if you are reading and are at the very beginning... it gets better. Just be patient!

I would love to know: what are you reading?

{What I'm Reading} 2012 Edition

One of my Resolutions for 2012 was to read 1 book a month, and I'm happy to say that I completed my goal well in advance of the New Year. I always love a good book recommendation, so I thought I'd share my 2012 reading list with all of you!

I'd recommended most of these to anyone. To be perfectly honest, the only one I didn't enjoy was Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. I didn't see the movie, so I don't have much to compare to. But this was a tough book to stay interested in, and I thought the writing could have been more compelling.

My favorite part of reading all 18 of these, was discovering some new (to me) authors. I will continue to read Diane Chamberlain, especially since I find her writing style similar to Jodi Picoult, and Elin Hilderbrand. Jodi is by far and away my most favorite author. Remember the questions you had to answer on those high-school "get to know me" surveys? ... one of them always was "If you could meet anyone for lunch, who would it be"? Jodi Picoult! Ahhh! Would be a dream come true.

I'd like to try and keep the {What I'm Reading} series running in 2013, so that I can share what I'm reading each month, rather than compiling them all at the end of the year.  Maybe we can start a little online book club?! I'm such a dork, but I'd love to be part of a book club.

What are you guys reading? I'd love to hear some of your favorites, too!

Happy Friday, friends!
